My Third Continent: A month in Australia and New Zealand 🔗
I just returned from a month-long trip to Australia and New Zealand, where I confirmed that cyclones really do spin in a counter-clockwise direction thanks to the Coriolis effect. How did I confirm this? By arriving in Brisbane, Australia a day before the largest cyclone in a generation hit that very city. That made for an interesting start of the trip; the normally-bustling city became a ghost town, with businesses closed and rainy streets empty. I rode out the windy storm on the 32nd floor of a skyscraper hotel, trusting that the modest swaying was merely a good sign that engineers had performed their calculations correctly.
After swaying in the hotel, it was time to sway on a rocking ship as I spent the next 25 nights at sea hopping between ports of call in Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific. Along the way, I snapped some photos, which I share below.
